Theater Environment

Any quality vehicle simulation requires not only the detailed and accurate simulation of the vehicle, but also the environment in which it operates. TBS provides multiple operations maps that can be used for both procedural training and mission rehearsal. Each theater consists of accurate simulations of graphical effects, weather, terrain modeling, and other components that create the aggregate of a living, immersive environment.

Theater Modeling

The current theaters included in TBS are the Caucasus region, the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR), and the Strait of Hormuz region. As we develop additional theaters such as Afghanistan and the Ukraine/Crimea, we continue to update and add to these current theaters (such as the National Training Center).

Theater maps are created with high resolution elevation topography mesh and textures. Our goal is to create close facsimiles of real world locations to allow visual navigation based on real landmarks, realistic mission rehearsal training, and build situational awareness of the region prior to crews being deployed.

Elements of each theater map include the accurate inclusion of:

  • Road, rail, powerline, canal, and river GIS network
  • Cities and towns
  • Both civilian and military airfields with navigation aids. Airfields are modeled with accurate runways, lighting, taxiways and ramps, and support buildings
  • Ports
  • Power stations
  • Forests, snow-capped mountains, river valleys, and other natural features
  • Agricultural fields, ports, power stations / transmission lines, factories, and other man-made landmarks
  • Procedurally-generated automobile and train traffic

Other theaters can be added to TBS based on client needs.

Weather, Seasons, and Time of Day

Each mission can be assigned a specific day and time that has corresponding sun, moon, and star positions, lighting, and seasonal ground and object textures. Both hand-crafted weather conditions can be created that encompass wind conditions, turbulence, fog, clouds, air temperature, cloud deck altitudes, cloud thickness, barometric pressure, and precipitation (rain, thunderstorms, and snow). In addition to the manually created weather conditions, TBS can also generate dynamic weather based on high and low pressure systems.

Artificial Intelligence and Mission Editor

Any vehicle unit placed within a mission that is not being controlled by a human client, uses our proprietary Artificial Intelligence (AI) system. This is a powerful system that allows our AI to operate independently in highly fluid combat situations. Using our Mission Editor, the AI can be directed to behave and react in a very realistic manner that suits the mission rehearsal objective.

The AI system applies to all unit types and includes such items as:

  • Airfield and aircraft carrier flight operations
  • Variable Rules of Engagement, Alert Levels, RTB conditions, Threat Reactions, Launch Criteria, Defensive Systems Use, etc.
  • Aircraft CAP, CAS, PGM-Attack, Anti-Ship, AFAC, Escort, and other tasking types
  • AWACS and GCI control and tasking
  • Aircraft offensive and defensive maneuvers, tactics, and weapon use based on threat and combat situation and set restrictions
  • Aircraft use of surface attack using our full range of weapons and employing both Electronic Attack and countermeasure systems
  • Armor and naval combatants can engage with various weapon systems:
    • Armor units with main tank guns, auto cannon, machine guns, anti-tank guided missiles, anti-aircraft machine guns and defend themselves with smoke grenades.
    • Naval units can employ deck guns, Close in Weapon Systems, anti-ship cruise missiles, land attack cruise missiles, and surface to air missiles.

Our AI system combined with the included Mission Editor allows you to create virtually any combat situation.

Training and Mission Rehearsal

The complete simulation environment that TBS provides is ideal for both procedural and mission rehearsal training. This is available in a small footprint using a single desktop or laptop to power each TBS station.

Each TBS station can be displayed through various options:

  • Single monitor
  • Multi-monitor
  • Virtual Reality (VR) systems like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
  • Dome projection

All are supported and we can provide specific support to meet your simulator station needs.

Mission Recording and Replay

During the running of any mission in TBS, the events are recorded for later feedback. This mission playback is a valuable tool to review the events of the mission and learn from what went right and what went wrong. Mission playback can be projected on a larger display format for group debriefing.

In addition to the in-mission playback, an ACMI playback option is also available.

Given our ability to rapidly simulate aircraft systems and suite updates, TBS is well-suited to the role of a procedures and part task trainer. Be it as a simple laptop training system or a physical training cockpit powered by TBS, we can cater TBS to provide this training solution for you.

Mission Rehearsal Training

Deployed forces benefit from a Mission Rehearsal Trainer that can quickly and accurately re-create the target and threat environment prior to launch. With the import of an AOR map, TBS can easily be configured and networked to allow multiple flights to first rehearse the mission from the carrier or home airbase.

As provided, TBS is an unclassified system. However, we realize that clients will require the import of more accurate weapon and sensor systems with data that is not publicly available. TBS accommodates the ability for the client to enter specific parameters and performance variables permitting input of classified and sensitive data in a controlled environment. The LUA code base is exceptionally adaptable and flexible for optimum customization.
